Investigation has been launched in the Counterintelligence Department of the State Security Service of Georgia on the basis of the alarm of radiation detection portal at the border-crossing point “Sadakhlo” at Georgia-Armenia state border, into the fact of illegal handling of radioactive substances and breach of customs regulations. Investigation established that there has been an attempted transportation of substance “Thorium” packed in 4 packages via cargo micro-bus driven by the citizen of Armenia through Georgia, from Armenia to the Russian Federation.
At 14:00, a press briefing will be held at the State Security Service of Georgia. Topic:Fact of illegal handling of radioactive material and breach of customs regulations.

The officers of Counterintelligence Department under the State Security Service of Georgia, as a result of operative-searching and investigative activities, detained two members of a criminal group, the citizens of Georgia - Gocha G. and Roman K. on the fact of illegal handling and sale of nuclear material in Kobuleti.

The importance of the US support in countering CBRN threats was discussed at State Security Service of Georgia at the meeting attended by Simon Limage, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Nonproliferation Programs and the representatives of the State Security Service of Georgia. Hotel Holiday Inn hosted Meeting of Interagency Coordination Board for the Fight Against Chemical, Biological, Radioactive and Nuclear Hazards, where board representatives presented one year report within CBRN National risk mitigation 2015-2018 action plan. The document was elaborated with the support of the UN, EU and the United States and was adopted in March, 2015. Georgia is the first among EU partner countries to elaborate and adopt the above-mentioned document.
