Deputy Head of the State Security Service of Georgia Opened The first South East and Eastern Europe (SEEE) Regional Radiological Detection Exercise

Grigol Liluashvili, Deputy Head of The State Security Service of Georgia opened the first South East and Eastern Europe (SEEE) Regional Radiological Detection Exercise “Lion shield”.

The Exercise was implemented within the framework of the European Union (EU) Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear (CBRN) Risk Mitigation Centre of Excellence (CoE) Initiative, in partnership with the State Security Service of Georgia (SSSG), the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), and the Science and Technology Center in Ukraine (STCU).

The Exercise is hosted by the State Security Service of Georgia, as a co-organizer and observant. The practical part of the Exercise will be held at Technological Innovations and Training Center of Operative-Technical Agency under the State Security Service of Georgia.

During the exercise particular attention will be payed to the regional cooperation between the participant sectors and the states.  Representatives from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Armenia and Ukraine will participate in four-day practical exercise.

The exercise consists of three field simulations based on three different scenarios. The scenarios will be focused on incidents involving trafficking of radioactive/nuclear materials in different settings. The participants will be given the opportunity to identify best practices on nuclear detection and initial response, as well as on coordination required to investigate an incident involving radioactive and nuclear materials.

The Exercise will be observed by Georgian and Foreign experts including from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), The Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority (NRPA), the Defense Threat Reduction Office (DTRO) as well as the Department of Energy Office of the U.S. Embassy in Georgia.
