Statement of the State Security Service of Georgia

We would like to respond to the information disseminated by one of the media outlets on the individuals detained by the State Security Service of Georgia. The story has provided public a number of misleading information.

We emphasize that the individuals named in the information, were detained as a result of joint activities of the State Security Service of Georgia alongside Prosecutor’s Office much earlier before the mentioned story has been broadcasted– on October 2nd, 2018 and both of them are in the penitentiary. They have been sentenced to two months of preliminary detention.

In order to inform public on the detention of the mentioned individuals, we are disseminating the additional information. The officers of General Inspection under the State Security Service of Georgia, as a result of operative-searching and investigative activities detained Otar G., the employee of the State Security Service and Irakli G., a lawyer on the fact of swindling in large quantities by a group with a prior arrangement.

Investigation established that, Otar G. and Irakli G. with a prior arrangement got in touch with the relative of two individuals wanted by the Russian Federation who are serving the pre-extradition detention at the moment and promised them to release the wanted individuals through the State Security Service and Prosecutor’s Office and in return demanded money in large quantities. On October 2, 2018, the mentioned individuals appropriated USD 10 000 by deceptive means and were detained by the officers of the General Inspection of th State Secuirty Service of Georgia.

Investigation is in progress on the fact of swindling in large quantities with a prior arrangement by a group (Article 19-180, Part II, Subparagraph “A” and part III Subparagraph “B”, of the Criminal Code of Georgia).
