State Security Service Detained Two Individuals on the Fact of Illegal Handling and Sale of Nuclear Material

The officers of Counterintelligence Department under the State Security Service of Georgia, as a result of operative-searching and investigative activities, detained two members of a criminal group, the citizens of Georgia -  Gocha G. and Roman K. on the fact of illegal handling and sale of nuclear material in Kobuleti.

Investigation established, that the mentioned individuals had been planning to sell nuclear material “Uranium” for USD 2 800 000. The object seized as a result of searching of the detainees, has undergone forensics which concluded that the total weight of the object is 40,19 gr. and it contains radioactive isotope - “Uranium-238”, that falls under the category of nuclear material. The seized substance poses life and health hazards.

Investigation is in progress on the fact of illegal handling and sale of nuclear material (Article 230, paragraph I of the Criminal Code of Georgia which envisages from 5 to 10 years of imprisonment).

Investigation is carried out by Counterintelligence Main Investigative Division under the State Security Service of Georgia.
