Delegation of the State Security Service of Georgia Participates in UN Virtual Counter-Terrorism Week.

Georgian delegation led by Deputy Head of the State Security Service of Georgia Aleksi Batiashvili participates in Virtual Conference of the Heads of Counterterrorism Services of UN Member states “On Strategic and Practical Challenges of Countering Terrorism in a Global Pandemic Environment”.

The member of Permanent Representation of Georgia to the United Nations attended the event along with the representatives of the State Security Service of Georgia.  

Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres opened the Virtual Counter-Terrorism Week. The Secretary-General highlighted the importance of multilateral cooperation in the fight against terrorism. At the first webinar of the Week, participants discussed negative impacts of COVID-19, as well as ways how societies evolve and respond to social and technological changes in the post-COVID-19 environment, and how the pandemic will influence international efforts to prevent and counter terrorism.

Within the scope of the Virtual Week, interactive discussions will be held on threats of bio and cyber terrorism, as well as on the opportunities to enhance the protection of victims of terrorism.  The participants will also discuss radicalization prevention and reintegration issues, UN anti-terrorism programs, as well as human rights and the role of media and civil society in preventing and countering terrorism.

High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Police, Josef Borrell and other high-ranking representatives attended the opening of the conference. More than 700 representatives from around the world attend the Virtual Counter –Terrorism Week 2020.
