Head of the State Security Service of Georgia Held Meeting with Head of Delegation of International Red Cross Committee (ICRC) in Georgia and Envoy on Missing Persons

Head of the State Security Service of Georgia, Grigol Liluashvili held a meeting with Head of Delegation of International Red Cross Committee (ICRC) in Georgia, Severin Chappaz and an Envoy on Missing Persons in the Caucasus, Daniel Mac Sweeney.

During the meeting, the parties discussed cooperation existing between Georgia and International Red Cross Committee (ICRC). Humanitarian efforts especially those taken by the organization in Georgia in the direction of support provided to the residents affected by armed conflicts, have been highlighted.

Effective cooperation with regard to search and identification of missing persons has been stressed and engagement of the ICRC throughout this process has been highly appreciated. In this context, appointment of an Envoy on Missing Persons in the Caucasus, Daniel Mac Sweeney has been discussed.

The representatives of International Red Cross Committee stressed the fact that the position of envoy has been created for the first time in the organization, which is an evidence of the necessity to continue work in the direction of accounting for the persons missing as a result of the conflicts in 90-ies and Russia-Georgia 2008 war.

During the meeting the Head of the State Security Service has attached special attention to one of the matters of priority – unconditional release of the citizens of Georgia – Zaza Gakheladze, Lasha Khetereli, Genadi Bestaev and Irakli Bebua  - who are serving unlawful imprisonment in the occupied regions.

The parties also discussed situation created in the context of COVID-19 pandemic, as well as existing challenges and efforts directed in order to overcome them.
