Anti-corruption Agency under the State Security Service of Georgia detained the Head of LEPL State Regulation Agency for Medical Activities

The State Security Service of Georgia continues its efforts against so-called “Pharmacy drug addiction” and effective steps have been made in this direction. The officers of Anti-corruption Agency under the State Security Service of Georgia, as a result of searching and investigative activities conducted within the framework of ongoing investigation into  illicit traffic of psychotropic medications in an area of so-called “Pharmacy drug addiction”, on the grounds of judge's decision detained Gia Tvalavadze, the head of LEPL State Regulation Agency for Medical Activities under the Ministry of Internally Displaced persons from the occupied Territories, Labour, Health and Social Affairs on the fact of for misusing his official powers.  Citizens Involved in illegal entrepreneurial business: Nino K., Ketevan Ch., Lasha Ch., Nino G. and Natela M., have been also detained.  

Investigation established, that illegal realization of psychotropic substances was carried out in 15 pharmacies of Tbilisi and Gori. The directors and actual owners of the mentioned pharmacies, aiming at receiving private material gain, carried out illegal entrepreneurial activities. In particular, the realization of the psychotropic medications, as well as those subordinated to the special control has been carried out without authorization and through breach of permission conditions, as a result of which they received the income in large quantities. 

On the other hand, the head of the LEPL State Regulation Agency Gia Tvalavadze, through misusing his official powers, didn’t respond to the notifications logged by the “Hot line” concerning realization of various psychotropic medications and medications subordinated to the special control without prescription by the mentioned pharmacies, which resulted in substantial violation of state interests.

The officers of Anti-Corruption Agency under the State Security Service of Georgia, within the framework of the mentioned criminal case brought 20 individuals to criminal justice whose income through  illegal entrepreneurial activities and realization of psychotropic medications without prescription estimated up to GEL  4 094 709. 

Investigation is carried out on the fact of misusing official powers and illegal entrepreneurial activity committed by a group (Article 332, part I and Article 192 part II Sub-paragraph „a” of The Criminal Code of Georgia, which envisages from 3 to 5 years of imprisonment).

Investigation is carried out by the Anticorruption Agency under the State Security Service of Georgia.
